Peter Coyote is an American actor, author, director, and narrator of films, theatre, television, and audio books. He is best known for his roles in films such as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Cross Creek, and Erin Brockovich. Coyote was born in Manhattan, New York City, on October 10, 1941. He is the son of Ruth (Fidler) and Morris Cohon, an investment banker. He was raised in a Jewish family. Coyote began his acting career in the late 1960s, appearing in several off-Broadway productions. He made his film debut in the 1972 film The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean. He went on to appear in several other films, including E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Cross Creek (1983), and Erin Brockovich (2000). Coyote has also appeared in numerous television shows, including The X-Files, Law & Order, and The West Wing. He has narrated numerous documentaries, including The National Parks: America's Best Idea (2009) and The Roosevelts: An Intimate History (2014).
